An online course in Essentials
The purpose of the material on the following pages is to set forth on the web the equivalent of a course in the Essentials. The material is drawn from ongoing class room instruction. It is presently under development for the web and the intention is to add lessons, as time permits, from actual classes. For one who is in the Spokane area the better option is:

The Essentials of Reformed Doctrine
The Essentials is a systematic course in Reformed Doctrine which follows what are traditionally called the five Loci or divisions of Dogmatics. The material is intended for late high school or early college students. It is also used on the mission field with new members. The purpose of the course is instruction from the Word of God in the basics of sound doctrine and the Reformed and Christian faith.
The goal is that one may know what he believes with clarity, why he believes it, and where it is taught in the Word of God. Reformed churches require a knowledgeable confession of faith of adult members, which is a confession of "the Reformed faith" as we hold it. For while faith in Christ is a personal matter of the love of Christ, it is also a faith that knows Him and does so according to the Scriptures.
God's Word is a word of Truth. By comparing spiritual things with spiritual and Scripture with Scripture, one may know what is the teaching of the Word of God. It is not a matter of human opinion. There is truth and the lie. There is the truth of the gospel and the truth of Christ, and there are false gospels and false Christs. When God's people are destroyed for lack of knowledge and the church given to confusion by every wind of strange doctrine which blows through the it, true believers are robbed of their hope, comfort, and joy, and the spiritual peace of the church is troubled.
The Essentials also belongs to the labor of the church to commit to the generations to come the heritage of the gospel. For a Reformed believer this is a serious matter, for it has to do with the spiritual welfare of his children and grandchildren. If parents are ignorant of the truth, they cannot teach their children.
It belongs to the shame of the present state of the Christian church, also the Reformed and Presbyterian community, and that a shame before the face of Christ, that knowledge of the Word and doctrine is abysmal. That which the Christian church has confessed for millennia is being lost. What the Reformation confessed with precision and clarity is being corrupted, denied, and forsaken. The reason that false teachers can teach almost anything today, lies at the door of the doctrinal and spiritual ignorance of the modern Christian, who is more focused on his feelings about the Word than what the Word actually says. The end of this trend is death, yes, death, especially in the generations. "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge," Hosea 4:6.
The materials for the lessons are presently in the form of handouts. They are being reformatted for the web in a more of an essay format.
