Article 12:

Of the Creation.

We believe that the Father, by the Word, that is, by his Son, [1] hath created of nothing, the heaven, the earth, and all creatures, as it seemed good unto him, giving unto every creature its being, shape, form, and several offices to serve its Creator. That he doth also still uphold and govern them by his eternal providence, and infinite power, [2] for the service of mankind, [3] to the end that man may serve his God. [4]

He also created the angels good, [5] to be his messengers [6] and to serve his elect; [7] some of which are fallen from that excellency, in which God created them, into everlasting perdition; [8] and the others have, by the grace of God, remained steadfast and continued in their primitive state.[9] The devils and evil spirits are so depraved, that they are enemies of God and every good thing, to the utmost of their power, as murderers, watching to ruin the Church [10] and every member thereof, and by their wicked stratagems to destroy all; [11] and are, therefore, by their own wickedness, adjudged to eternal damnation, [12] daily expecting their horrible torments.

Therefore we reject and abhor the error of the Sadducees, who deny the existence of spirits and angels: [13] and also that of the Manichees, who assert that the devils have their origin of themselves, and that they are wicked of their own nature, without having been corrupted.

Scriptural Proof
  1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. Gen. 1:1;

    Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things , that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth. Isa. 40:26;

    For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God. Heb. 3:4;

    Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. Rev. 4:11;

    But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. 1 Cor. 8:6;

    All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John 1:3;

    For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: Col.1:16.

  2. Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Heb. 1:3;

    Thou hast set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth. ... Psa.104:10 &c;

    Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; Acts 17:25.

  3. Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: 1 Tim. 4:3,4;

    And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so. Gen. 1:29,30;

    And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. Gen. 9:2,3;

    He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth; And wine that maketh glad the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread which strengtheneth man' heart. Psa. 104:14,15.

  4. Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; 1 Cor. 3:22;

    For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Cor. 6:20;

    Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Matt. 4:10.

  5. For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: Col. 1:16.

  6. Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. Psa. 103:20;

    The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. Psa. 34:7;

    Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts. Psa. 148:2.

  7. Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? Heb. 1:14;

    The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. Psa. 34:7.

  8. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44;

    For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment; 2 Peter 2:4;

    And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep. Luke 8:31;

    And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. Jude 6.

  9. When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory: Matt. 25:31.

  10. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Peter 5:8;

    And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it. Job 1:7.

  11. Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? Gen. 3:1;

    But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. Matt. 13:25;

    Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. 2 Cor. 2:11;

    But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. ... And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2 Cor. 11:3,14.

  12. Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: Matt. 25:41;

    And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep. Luke 8:30,31.

  13. For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both. Acts 23:8.
