Article 23:

Of Justification.

We believe that our salvation consists in the remission of our sins for Jesus Christ's sake, and that therein our righteousness before God is implied: as David and Paul teach us, declaring this to be the happiness of man, that God imputes righteousness to him without works. [1] And the same apostle saith, that we are justified freely by his grace, through the redemption which is in Jesus Christ. [2]

And therefore we always hold fast this foundation, ascribing all the glory to God, [3] humbling ourselves before him, and acknowledging ourselves to be such as we really are, without presuming to trust in any thing in ourselves, or in any merit of ours, [4] relying and resting upon the obedience of Christ crucified alone, [5] which becomes ours, when we believe in him. [6] This is sufficient to cover our iniquities, and to give us confidence in approaching to God; [7] freeing the conscience of fear, terror and dread, without following the example of our first father, Adam, who, trembling, attempted to cover himself with fig-leaves. [8] And verily if we should appear before God, relying on ourselves, or on any other creature, though ever so little, we should, alas! be consumed. [9] And therefore every one must pray with David: O Lord, enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. [10]

Scriptural Proof
  1. To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, Luke 1:77;

    In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: Col. 1:14;

    Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. Psa.32: 1,2;

    Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Rom. 4:6,7.

  2. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Rom. 3:23,24;

    Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. Acts 4:12.

  3. Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, and for thy truth' sake. Psa. 115:1;

    For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it? 1 Cor. 4:7;

    For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. Rom. 4:2.

  4. For who maketh thee to differ from another? and what hast thou that thou didst not receive? now if thou didst receive it, why dost thou glory, as if thou hadst not received it 1 Cor. 4:7;

    For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. Rom. 4:2;

    That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. 1 Cor. 1:29-31.

  5. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Rom. 5:19.

  6. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Heb. 11:6,;

    For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Eph. 2:8;

    To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. 2 Cor. 5:19;

    Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. 1 Tim. 2:6.

  7. Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: Rom. 5:1;

    In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him. Eph. 3:12;

    My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: 1 John 2:1.

  8. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. Gen. 3:7;

  9. The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness hath surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? Isa. 33:14;

    Cursed be he that confirmeth not all the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say, Amen. Deut. 27:26;

    For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all James 2:10.

  10. If thou, LORD, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand? Psa. 130:3

    Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. Matt. 18:23-26;

    And enter not into judgment with thy servant: for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. Psa. 143:2;

    And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. Luke 16:15.
