Lord's Day 43
Question 112. What is required in the ninth commandment?
Answer. That I bear false witness [a] against no man, nor falsify [b] any man's words; that I be no backbiter, [c] nor slanderer; that I do not judge, nor join [d] in condemning any man rashly, or unheard; but that I [e] avoid all sorts of lies and deceit, as the proper works [f] of the devil, unless I would bring down upon me the heavy wrath of God; likewise, that in judgment and all other dealings I love the truth, speak it uprightly [g] and confess it; also that I defend and promote, [h] as much as I am able, the honor and good character of my neighbor.

- Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. Mat. 7:1&c;
Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: Luke 6:37
- Ye shall not steal, neither deal falsely, neither lie one to another. Lev. 19:11
- Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that deal truly are his delight. Prov. 12:22;
A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame. Prov. 13:5
- Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 1Cor. 13:6;
Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. Eph. 4:25
- And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. 1Pet. 4:8
