The Promise
Serious Questions, Serious Issues The Real Promise, The Real Keeper Preface The following material is set forth, in part, as a response to the current promotion of Promise Keepers and its latest perversion of the gospel represented in its material. The issues of home and family and Christian marriage are serious ones. The word of God has sound answers to what for any believer are serious questions in life. The struggle with sin in a sinful world, the difficulties that beset any marriage, home, and family are ones which multiply in our age. This is especially the case when there is a serious departure from the word of God that pervades the Christian church. False solutions and false answers will not build a solid foundation in home and marriage. The institution of marriage, which God designed and ordained is seriously being destroyed in the Christian church. One need only read what the scriptures say about marriage and divorce and compare it to what is taking place, often sanctified by the name Christian, to see that the light of the Word is growing dim. The promises of God for a believer and his children are also set aside and made void in our age. One only need listen to the scriptures and how they speak of children and then listen to the world, also the church world today, to see that the word of God and the promises of the gospel are being forsaken. This problem is compounded by a departure from the truth of saving grace and the biblical way of salvation in the power of Christ which is taking place in the church. A man-centered religion, which is not the gospel, is being substituted for a God-centered, genuinely Christ-centered, confidence in the only Savior in life and death. The cross of Christ, the power of the risen Lord, His grace in the hearts of dead sinners is the only hope of man lost in himself. But it is God's power not man's. He is God, not a force under man's power. The goal of faithfulness as a husband and father, in marriage and the home is commendable. But it rests upon the promises of God and not men, upon the work of Christ, not man, upon the working of the Spirit through faith by the word. God is a God who keeps His promises. His word never returns unto Him void. He holds the vows of marriage. He sets children in the home to be brought up in the nurture of the word. God in Christ, not man is the answer to these issues of life. Depart from this and the foundations of a true Christian home, in joy and in trial, in good times and difficult times, are destroyed. But that foundation in the word means we also take God's word seriously, as authoritative, and not trust in our own wisdom or our own inventions. The following material is intended to address some serious questions and give answers to them. It is critical of Promise Keepers because it must be in the light of the scriptures. Its primary interest however is to turn to the Word of God, search the promises of the scriptures and seek a biblical answer to many of these questions. That the material might be profitable the focus is on what the scriptures teach, and links are given to areas of further study with each article. |
